BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)-  The snow moved into South Buffalo with rush hour traffic on Monday and fell steadily for hours. As the lake effect band moved north, another problem developed in the Elmwood Village and on the West Side.

“It’s kind of disheartening when the power goes out because I can’t do anything about it,” said Tom Londergan, who lives in the Elmwood Village.

More than 1,500 houses lost power in Buffalo.

“The power was out for a couple of hours so I came out here to run some errands,” said Jake Mansfield, who lives on the West Side. “The roads are a little slippery.”

Power was restored to 1,000 homes by 9:30 p.m. and most of the remaining houses had power by 11:00 p.m.

The outage slowed traffic on Elmwood Ave. The stop light at the corner of Elmwood and W. Ferry wasn’t working so stop signs were set up until power was restored.

As the snow continued to fall, the City of Buffalo had 30 plows clearing the roads.

“What we do is we focus on the mains roads and the secondary roads,” said Steven Stepniak, the commissioner of Buffalo’s Department of Public Works. “The snow moved in obviously from the south so we had extra crews south of Buffalo and moved them north accordingly.”

Drivers in Buffalo told us the roads seemed to be mostly clear of snow.

“It’s only been snowing a couple hours and the roads are okay,” said Vanessa Jones, who lives in North Buffalo. “Down Kenmore Ave., down Elmwood Ave., getting ready to go down Delaware Ave. as well.”

News 4 found the roads were hit and miss, some were covered in snow while others were clear.

People living in Buffalo told News 4 they welcome the weather.

“I’ll finally be able to take my daughter sledding,” said Mansfield.”I bought her a sled for Christmas and haven’t been able to use it, we will now.”
