BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- There are more than three million New Yorkers living in poverty. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new plan on Sunday to reduce that number statewide.
His plan focuses on community involvement. Buffalo is one of 10 cities that will get money to come up with a plan to reduce poverty.
Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement at True Bethel Baptist Church.
Hochul said Buffalo will be eligible for $500,000 and the money should be used by businesses, non-profits, and local officials to develop a strategy to reduce poverty. Community leaders are asked to get input from people who receive the services.
“What we have determined is the best decisions on how to get people out of poverty, into better housing, into better educational opportunities, and into better jobs comes truly from the community,” said Hochul. “No longer will Albany be dictating from the top down, it will come from the bottom up.”
Buffalo will also have the chance to draw from a pool of $20 million to fund projects the community comes up with.
