TOWN OF EVANS, N.Y. (WIVB) — Dangerous driving conditions may be to blame for a deadly crash in the Town of Evans. Police told News 4 an ambulance and tractor trailer collided during a whiteout on Tuesday.
Three people were in the ambulance when the crash happened the intersection of Route 20 and Versailles Plank Road, according to Evans Police.
Lt. Michael Masullo told us the ambulance was headed south on Rt. 20 as it transported Joseph Sangbush, 85, from a hospital to a group home.Sangbush is from Perrysburg, New York.
They have not released which hospital or group home the ambulance was traveling between.
Lt. Masullo said there were whiteout conditions when the ambulance collided head on with a tractor trailer heading north on Rt. 20.
A spokesperson with Rural Metro’s parent group AMR told News 4 an EMT was driving the ambulance and another EMT was in the back with Sangbush.
Sangbush died in the crash. The two EMT’s suffered minor injuries and are expected to be okay.
Lt. Masullo said the driver of the tractor trailer is at ECMC with serious head trauma. She was driving back to Canada, where she’s from, at the time of the crash.
Town of Evans Police say alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash. They are still working to determine the cause. Police have not charged anyone involved with causing the crash.
