BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Dozens of firetrucks and responders converged on a recycling facility on Metcalfe and Clinton Streets for a large rubbish fire around 8pm Sunday night.
Fire officials said the fire was being fueled by a number of things, including trash, auto parts, fiberglass, and pallets. Several small explosions could be heard. Authorities say there was no hazardous material involved, and the explosions likely came from sealed containers, or tires.
A nearby chemical warehouse was in the path of the fire, but crews were able to fight the fire back, and secure the building.
During the peak of the fire, flames could be seen shooting into the sky. Thick black smoke was visible for miles.
Buffalo Fire Department Division Chief Peter Kertzie says a HAZ-MAT team was on scene. The team monitored the air for any signs of dangerous fumes. Kertize said the team found elevated levels of carbon monoxide, but it was nothing out of the ordinary for a large fire.
Kertzie said the fire consisted of burning mountains of burning debris, creating a tough and dangerous environment for firefighters. Crews are expected to be on scene for several hours.
There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
