BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- NFTA is cautioning travelers to keep their eyes and ears alert, despite no immediate threat to our region. The warning comes after terror attacks in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday.

“Be aware of your surroundings, anything could happen,” said Douglas Hartmayer, the NFTA spokesperson. “If you see something amiss, and it really looks amiss, bring it to the attention of a law enforcement officer.”

Hartmayer told News 4 people can also report suspicious activity by using the app ‘See Something, Say Something’, which is available for mobile devices.

“That then has direct communication right to the NFTA Police Department,” he said. “You can text a message, you can talk to an officer, and you can take a photograph and send that to an officer and actually develop two-way commutations between you and an NFTA police officer right away.”

NFTA stepped up security at the Buffalo Niagara Airport on Tuesday.

“That would be canine officers, tactical officers both plain clothes and in uniform,” described Hartmayer.

He said it’s an effort to make travelers feel safer after the Brussels attacks.

CBS News reports the bombs went off before the security checkpoint.

“You have the area where people are arriving, you can’t protect that,” said Security Consultant Peter Ahearn.

Ahearn is also a retired FBI agent who once worked in Buffalo.

“The best thing to do have your boarding passes, go right to the security zone, wherein and of itself is an area that has been attacked before,” said Ahearn. “Then get behind the security barriers and into the airport terminal and that’s where you’re probably going to be the safest.”

Flights expected to depart from Toronto to Brussels Tuesday were cancelled. Although two are still scheduled to leave for Brussels on Wednesday, Brussels Airport said it will be closed.
