BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Hundreds of Western New Yorkers celebrates St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday. They packed the historic First Ward for the Valley Community Association’s Annual Parade.

The Old First Ward is known for its strong Irish heritage, dating back to the construction of the Erie Canal.

Those at the parade said the community is part of the appeal.

“It’s just a tradition now,” said Jerry Breen, of West Seneca. “I just keep coming down with my mom, it’s been about about 10 or 15 years now. It’s more of a neighborhood, as opposed to the Buffalo parade where it’s not as in touch with the community.”

Buffalo Police said nearly 40 summons were issued for violating the open container law.
