BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The suspect in a deadly hit and run in Buffalo was arraigned Sunday morning.
Wade J. Sanders, 54, is charged with failure to report a motor vehicle accident resulting in a fatality, which is a felony.
Buffalo Police told us the crash happened on Bailey Avenue on May 26. Surveillance cameras at a nearby store recorded the crash. It showed 60 year old Arthur Redrick crossing the street when a white SUV hit him.
Redrick’s family spoke to News 4 outside the courtroom.
“He was crossing the street, just going to the store and this man just hit him,” said Tanika Lucas, his niece.
Police said Sanders turned himself into police on Saturday.
Lt. Jeff Rinaldo told News 4 the surveillance video helped officers identify the SUV involved in the crash, which was found about half a mile from the crash scene at an abandoned house. Lt. Rinaldo said they don’t believe Sanders was the registered owner of the car. They also do not believe there was anyone else in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Lucas told News 4 their family helped police make the arrest and that Sanders was with an off-duty BPD officer when he was arrested.
BPD told us on Sunday that they are aware there was an off-duty officer was with the suspect, and the family confronted the two men. We’re told there is now an ongoing investigation into those circumstances.
