EAST AURORA, N.Y. (WIVB)- An East Aurora fire department uncovered a time capsule from more than a hundred years ago. It’s from 1889 and contained papers, including bylaws, and old copper pennies.

It was hidden behind a dedication plaque at the Central Fire Station on Oakwood Avenue. This isn’t the first time it was opened.

In 1933, it was discovered during a remodeling project at the East End Fire Hall. It was opened and items were added to the capsule.

Twenty-one years later in 1954, items were added again and it was moved to the Central Fire Station.

For more than 100 years it’s held long lost company history, including handwritten rosters.

“A lot of these names were recognizable because our streets are named after these folks,” said Robert Goller, the historian for both the town and village. “Some of the folks who are here are related to some of these earlier folks so as we were reading out the names it was interesting to hear them say ‘Oh that was so and so’s great grandfather’.”

Goller said they plan to put the capsule inside a new version with mementos from 2015. Then, they’ll hide it so someone can discover it 100 years from today.
