BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- 7 year-old Bobby Caufeild celebrated his birthday in June and received a bike as a gift.
On Thursday the bike was stolen from the porch of his Johnson St. home.
“I think somebody came in front of the house and took it because they didn’t want to walk home,” said Bobby.
His mom posted a sign directed at the person who stole it. The sign read “Dear A**h***, congratulations on breaking my 7 year old’s heart by stealing his birthday bike! Nothing good will come to you. And just remember God is watching!!!”
Sunday morning there was a knock at the door.
“We stopped by and I asked the mother if the bike was replaced and she said she didn’t have the ability to get the new bike,” said Officer Craig Macy.
Macy had seen the sign when working with Lt. Lance Russo in the area. They purchased Bobby a brand new red bike and helmet.
“When he came in the door, I hugged him because I was getting a new bike,” said Bobby.
Buffalo Police Deputy Commissioner Kimberly Beaty says Officer Macy is “a true believer in community policing” and calls him an asset to the department. Beaty said that this isn’t the first time he has done something nice for children in the community.
“We have the ability to help people and it’s not just by traditional policing,” said Macy. “It was easy to make that happen.”
Macy is a community police officer for the BPD Housing Unit and said in the past they’ve brought children to Niagara Falls and UB basketball games. He said reaching out is part of the job.
Now Bobby and his family are saying thanks.
“That I like this bike so much that I want to ride it and that I enjoyed it because I rode it ten times,” said Bobby. “Thank you.”
